Title: Cutie in the City, 2019

About the work:

Cutie in the City documents the twists and turns in the life of a cutie as she skitters around town terrifying some and becoming terrified by others—making some laugh and getting laughed at by others. In the sociopolitical climate where people of color and immigrants are constantly dehumanized through pest-inflected rhetoric, it is necessary to use the figure of the cockroach as one of resistance, as one to go against the status quo, as one to question the disciplinary function of governments, laws, and police order. The cutie is a pest that will use her hyper-reproductive qualities to fight injustice and stand up for the humans and nonhumans who need a little extra advocacy.

Biography:

Recently awarded a 2019 Michael R. Hallaran Dissertation Fellowship, Garcia is a doctoral candidate in American Studies at the College of William & Mary. Her dissertation “Pesthumanism: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the non/Human Imaginary” articulates infestation as a form of structural violence against non-normative bodies and amplifies artist projects that subvert these pest-related racisms, xenophobias, and anti-LGBTQ+ violences.

Garcia received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (Sculpture), an MFA from SUNY Purchase (Visual Arts), an MA from Sotheby’s Institute of Art (Contemporary Art), and an MA from William & Mary (American Studies). She has exhibited her artwork at the Alexandria Museum of Art (VA), Ohio University Art Galleries (OH), The Downtown Gallery at University of Indiana Kokomo (IN), Peeler Art Center at DePauw University (IN), The Lincoln Center Art Gallery (CO), Sediment Arts (VA), Attleboro Arts Museum (MA), , and many others from coast to coast.

Garcia received the Juror’s Prize in New Directions 2018 at Barrett Art Center (NY), First in Show at Crooked Tree Arts Center (MN), and Third in Show at Art of Engagement at Touchstone Gallery (DC).

Although constantly moving through her vagabond tendencies, the artist currently lives and works between St. Petersburg, Florida and Prouts Neck, Maine with her wife and collaborator and their tiny poodle.
